The Tinsel Clothing
We're surprised there's not more talk about the Academy Awards and Hollywood Boulevard. Hollywood Boulevard is one of the most crime-ridden and drug-infested areas of Southern California. According to the morning DJs on WLS in Chicago, they'll need to roll out extra red carpet to cover all the syringes. Hollywood Boulevard is so bad that the LAPD had planned to start their street-camera surveillance operations there, and the LA Times calls it one of the world's most famous and infamous streets. So where's all the symbolism talk? You know, "The Academy Awards cover the rottenness of Hollywood Boulevard like Hollywood movies cover the poison in America's soul"? Stuff like that? Seems like too easy a target to miss.
Anyway, we'll do our part with these choice quotes about Hollywood:
"In Hollywood a marriage is a success if it outlasts milk." Rita Rudner
"Half the people in Hollywood are dying to be discovered and the other half are afraid they will be." Lionel Barrymore
"It's a scientific fact. For every year a person lives in Hollywood, they lose two points of their IQ." Truman Capote
"You can take all the sincerity in Hollywood, place it in the navel of a fruit fly and still have room enough for three caraway seeds and a producer's heart." Fred Allen
"Hollywood is a dreary industrial town controlled by hoodlums of enormous wealth, the ethical sense of a pack of jackals, and taste so degraded that it befouled everything it touched." S.J. Perelman
And, finally, perhaps the most well-known quote about Hollywood:
"Hollywood's a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss, and fifty cents for your soul. I know, because I turned down the first offer often enough and held out for the fifty cents."Marilyn Monroe
