Facebook Will Now Time Out for Kids After Two Hours

The well-publicized settlement with Meta requires it to make Facebook and Instagram time out for kids after two hours.

Two freakin' hours?

I kinda feel about that the way I felt when seeing those four-hour Viagra warnings. "Four hours like that?!?! What? Who would . . . Why?"

Heck, I feel like a worthless piece of shit (as opposed to a valuable piece) after scrolling on my phone for just ten minutes.

I realize we're talking about kids here, and I was a kid once who could easily watch two hours of Gilligan's Island, so I guess I shouldn't get self-righteous about it, but man: It's just another sign of our culture's broken family. When my dad walked in the door at 5:15, I knew that TV had better be turned off or the whole tube would land in the backyard, and if for some reason my dad was working late, my mom would come in at 5:30 (being merciful and not wanting to cut off my sixth viewing of that episode when the Mosquitos rock band landed on the island), click it off, and say, "Go outside."

Nellie Bowles: "Meta has agreed to pay up to $18 billion to settle claims that it harmed children. And Meta’s Facebook and Instagram platforms will now time out for kids after two hours, along with a slew of other reforms to make it less intrusive and addicting (the default setting will be heavily restricted notifications during school hours, no access to most parts of the apps between midnight and 6 a.m., etc.)."
