We in modern society can scarcely imagine Xenophon's feelings as he walked through the magnificent runes of the Assyrian cities.
Surely peasants in medieval Europe had the same feeling looking at Roman aqueducts and runes while they lived at a subsistence level.
For the last 500 years society has reliably gone up-up-up. But we forget that prior to that each civilization was more like the stock market. Prone to highs and lows.
