People are puzzled when they see my home study: a room about twice the size of a professional's office, with thousands of books, two upholstered chairs, lights situated at various spots, two desks, a computer, and reasonably-neat piles of notes, manuscripts, and correspondence. If they're not puzzled about its furnishings, they're puzzled about its location: in the basement, in the far corner. When people first open the door, they figure it's a storage closet because it's so "out of the way." The room also has no windows. When people ask, I explain, "I gotsa have my silence."
I'm not alone. An organization known as "Paragraph" exists solely to provide writers with a quiet place to write. Link.
Paragraph is a membership organization dedicated to providing an affordable and tranquil working environment for writers of all genres. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
Paragraph was created by writers for writers, with an understanding that writers work best in a quiet, comfortable space away from the hurry and obligation of urban life.
In classic "Everything else is fly-over land" style, the web page doesn't mention that they're located in NYC (it doesn't even mention Manhattan), but you can figure it out from the directions to their place.
