Well, far out. I’ve been trying to get my cholesterol down naturally for five years now without success, until now. It looks like the vegan approach is working. My bad cholesterol dropped from 156 (last October) to 118 (March blood work). Pretty much everything else in my life has stayed the same: stress, weight, alcohol intake, supplements. The only change is the vegan approach and a new regimen of smoothies (almond milk mixed with one banana, frozen berries, and spinach) about four times a week.
One other thing that may have helped: I’ve been chewing my nutritious food more thoroughly. Robin Daniels emphasizes in The Virgin Eye that doing things slowly helps on many fronts. As an example, he mentioned that chewing food slowly and thoroughly does a lot of good things, including rendering the food more “absorbable” by the body. For the past couple of years, I’ve been eating a ton of fruits and vegetables, but I often wolf them down. I started chewing them more thoroughly last winter. (Daniels’ observation, incidentally, is also a strong endorsement of good smoothies.)
Aside: My doctor on Monday agreed with everything above. He shares a little bit of my reluctance to take statin drugs, though he said I was foolish not to take them if I couldn’t get my bad cholesterol below 150.
Spring is finally here. Lettuce transplanting started last night with two plants. They appear to have made the transition. I’m transplanting about 40 more this evening and another 50 tomorrow. I planted a radish bed yesterday. Tomato and pepper seedlings are beginning to sprout in the grow station.
