Is the Left Hemisphere a PoS?
Naw, that's just a bit of rhetorical excess (Briefly Blog Post)
I wrote here that the left hemisphere is a "piece of s."
That's not remotely accurate. What is accurate is, "A renegade left hemisphere is a piece of s***."
The left hemisphere is crucial to our existence and, kept in its mode as servant of the right hemisphere master, a great thing. It's so great, McGilchrist emphasizes, nothing surpasses its abilities . . . except the right hemisphere.
I (and let's be honest, McGilchrist) bash it only because it has grown monstrous and is the cause of a modern world that is becoming increasingly difficult and dangerous, whether it's nuclear bombs or artificial intelligence, overweening bureaucratic control or fanatical reactions against it like extreme libertarianism (which is my left-hemispheric temptation).
Think of the left hemisphere as Norse mythology's Loki. He served Odin; he undermined Odin. After one too many tricks (killing beautiful Balder), Odin binds him forever (at least until Loki breaks free at Ragnarok).
And so it is with the left hemisphere. It serves and it tricks. And it's been so successful at its tricks since the modern era began (indeed, the modern era and left hemispheric thriving are virtually(?) synonymous), Loki has become the supreme god. But he's a usurper.
