### We in modern society can scarcely imagine Xenophon's feelings as he walked through the magnificent runes of the Assyrian cities.

### Surely peasants in medieval Europe had the same feeling looking at Roman aqueducts and runes while they lived at a subsistence level. 

### For the last 500 years society has reliably gone up-up-up. But we forget that prior to that each civilization was more like the stock market. Prone to highs and lows. 

### And let's not forget we could always go backwards.
