Good-bye, Californee

The NYT reports that Californians are leaving the coast and going to the Midwest [http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/07/business/07move.html?hp&ex=1131426000&en=5aa13860fa86497a&ei=5094&partner=homepage] . Maybe I'm feeling mean-spirited this morning, but I found this

MSM and Divorce

First NYT [https://thedailyeudemon.com/2931/], now WaPo [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/04/AR2005110402304.html?nav=most_emailed] . The devastation of divorce is finally entering our culture's mainstream. I am, no exaggeration, a bit stunned. Happy, but stunned: > Before the divorce

Natural Law at WaPo

WaPo has run a piece this morning about the potential 5-Catholic Supreme Court [http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/06/AR2005110601134.html] . The first half is ho-hum: the composition reflects tolerance toward Catholics, but does it reflect America's demographics? But the second

Identifying a Cult

I found this column by The God Squad (a Jewish Rabbi and Catholic Monsignor) interesting: Four common characteristics of a cult [http://www.detnews.com/2005/religion/0511/06/A23-372875.htm]. > 1. Love bombing. Most of the cults we've encountered engage in this highly successful technique

Digital Essay: Conservative for Diversity

I'm digging Google Print. One of my first GP research projects: Checking out Russell Kirk's use of the word “diversity” in The Conservative Mind. He referred to it as a society's “leaven” and had many other kind things to say about it: “Burke loathed

Porn to Go

Porn downloads are proving popular for iPods [http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/11/04/D8DLT9T0A.html]: > Purveyors of porn and entrepreneurs who spied a niche when Apple Computer Inc. unveiled its video-playing iPod are proving that sex even sells in tiny packages -- especially when it is portable.

Belloc on Eurabian War

The festivities in France prompted me to take a few Belloc books onto the front porch with me this morning. I ran across this passage in The Great Heresies: > The missionary efforts made by great Catholic order which have been occupied in trying to turn Mohammedans into Christians for

Old Church

> Israeli archaeologists said Saturday they have discovered what may be the oldest Christian church in the Holy Land on the grounds of a prison near the biblical site of Armageddon. > The Israeli Antiquities Authority said the ruins are believed to date back to the third or fourth centuries
