Brews You Can Use

My monthly column is up at The Register and it's about beer: What's Brewing in the Blogosphere? [http://ncregister.com/site/article/6289/] Subscription required. Excerpt: > Most every well-read Christian has heard of the Inklings, the literary group that counted J.R.R. Tolkien

Thursday Miscellany

Abby's Queer Eye Abby has come out strongly in favor of the gay movement [http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071009/ap_on_re_us/dear_abby_gay_marriage]. Nothing post-worthy, since I've long considered her too vapid to swim against the political current and

Drinking Club and Schall

The temperature was mild and skies sunny. I couldn't resist the temptation to hit the drinking club. Leaving the office at 3:30, I took a folder of work and sat on the patio with a tall Oberon. I only worked for about 20 minutes, but I drank

The Slow Eudemon and Hitler

I don't know if my wits are turned off ("Hey, Scheske, they're always off!") or if the stories on Internet are simply lame. Virtually nothing struck me as post-worthy (and it's not like I set the highest standards or anything). There

Hunker Down and Prepare for Battle

This is my weekend of fighting with the devil: Marie leaves first thing this morning and won't come home until late Sunday afternoon. She's inaccessible, except by a spotty cellphone that she normally can't hear. I have The Seven . . . and their functions: marching band

St. Francis' Day

On Monday, I referred to St. Therese Lisieux as "everyone's favorite saint." Foolish, and remarkably short-sighted, of me. That honor goes to today's saint: St. Francis of Assisi. The troubadour-turned-mendicant feast day is today, and everyone likes him, the holy and
