Some Saturday Stuff

One of the more intriguing new blogs I've seen: Old World Swine [http://timothyjones.typepad.com/old_world_swine/] by artist Timothy Jones, whose interests include Catholic faith, fine art, hiking, camping, brewing, bread and cheese, the usual dead British suspects (Chesterton, Belloc, Tolkien, Lewis), old movies, and

Voicemail Etiquette and Brews You Can Use

I cracked open a Leinenkugels Sunset Wheat Thursday night as I prepared this morning's Brews You Can Use. I don't think I've had it before. Oh mahon! Good stuff. Highly recommended (though it might be out of season by now). It's been

Pullman and Other Items from The Atlantic

The December issue of The Atlantic Monthly has a feature piece about The Golden Compass [http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/prem/200712/religious-movies]. Summary: Pullman's books are rabidly anti-Christian (the dark and murderous institution that pursues the protagonist is "the Magisterium"--subtle stuff), but

Light Day

My wife and I went out to celebrate a small matter last night, and now I'm a bit groggy and doing nothing but looking forward to a 16-ounce energy drink at the office. Time is also scarce. Just one thing: Lowe's has apologized for referring

Good Reception

Received in the mail: The Father Brown Reader [http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0976638673/thedailyeudem-20]. Looks perfect for people who want some GKC (or want to introduce their children to GKC) without the occasionally-daunting GKC prose. Based on what I read, Nancy Carpentier Brown has done

Monday Miscellany

Are you sleepy this morning! WAKE UP! with Larry Craig [http://heterodoxy.lustfulutterances.com/]. According to an email I received, he uses this saucy guy wannabe in addition to bathroom stalls. I have no idea if this link is legit, but if it is, it's further evidence that

Something for Sunday Morning

"According to many authors of spiritual books, progress in our life of piety depends a good deal on our recognition and understanding of our dominant defect. This is the defect that has the biggest influence on our behavior and thinking. It typically becomes evident in what we do, what

Some Stuff for Saturday Morning

Pornography is for fools and demons. That's one theme in the current issue of Catholic Men's Quarterly [http://www.houseonthemoor.com/]. It's filled with facts and anecdotes regarding the societal scourge. Congress obsesses over cigarettes [http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071110/ap_on_

Looking for Blogs

I'm looking for holiday blogs. If you know of a blog that discusses a lot of "Christmasy" and "Adventy" (man, how queer does that sound?) stuff, please let me know. If you plan on hitting the Christmas and Advent themes hard this year, please

Brews You Can Use

Most of my morning was spent on the queer issue, so now I have little time for the really important stuff. Just two things: 1. A friend gave me a copy of Imbibe magazine. It's pretty good. Something for everyone: beer-drinkers, women, even the apple martini crowd.
