Weekend Rambling

Ceiling. Trastevere

Solo was released yesterday. I doubt I'll go. I have tentatively decided not to go to any more Star Wars or super hero movies. Avengers Infinity War put me over the top, and it wasn't bad. I just suddenly found myself tired: tired of not knowing how, exactly, these characters die; tired of the oh-so cute and ironic quips; tired of the political correctness.

Years ago, I swore off animated movies. At this pace, I'm going to be relegated to watching reruns of 1980s movies, but no matter. We are in the Platinum Age of TV. There are so many great TV series out there that I missed: Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, The Wire, Etc. and Etc. and Etc. I have enough crap to watch until I exit this vale of digital tears.

I'm fascinated by the Chicago invasion last Saturday night. Have we ever had a city scene like we have in America today? Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s, you had slums, but most of the big cities were middle class or upper-middle

class. By the mid-1900s, the big cities were mixed among the classes. After the 1967 race riots, the cities quickly became almost entirely slum. Then in the late 1900s and early 2000s, a successful re-gentrification started to occur that, when combined with the few small areas that "hung on" during the late 1900s retreat from the cities, created solid islands of civilization in the ocean of slums. I compare these small outposts to the crusader kingdoms: outposts among a swarm of antagonists. How long can they hold on? How many more invasions will there be? Do we really think those outposts are safe when, on the turn of a switch (the creation of a social media flash mob), thousands of hostile youths can be mobilized to descend and ransack civilization? I don't have answers. I just wish we were asking the questions, but because they're racially charged, we won't.

Chalk one up for the Mormons for cutting ties with the Boy Scouts. I respect the LDS, especially in light of this decision. The Boy Scouts is descending into a leftist mess of an organization like the Girl Scouts. It's unavoidable. Mainstream and conservatives are deserting it in droves, which will leave it only one group of fans: the left. It will have to cater to the left to survive. If I had a son in Boy Scouts right now who enjoys it, I'd let him ride it out and try to make sure he has a good experience, but at this point, I would never let my son join to begin with. You'd just be throwing him into a cauldron of left-wing indoctrination (which starts immediately, even before he joins: the new gender-neutral name).
