Miscellaneous Rambling

Welcome to the longest day of the year. If you want to know more about the summer solstice than I, click here.

So what saint can we spend the longest day of the year imitating? None. According to my St. James Calendar of the Christian Year, the RCC has no saint it remembers today. So I went to American Catholic and checked its saint calendar: same result. That, of course, can't be the case: each day of the year normally has a dozen or more, so I went to Catholic dot Org. It has over two dozen listed . . . none of whom I recognized (St. Helena isn't that Helena).

But I did learn about a thing called the "Irish Catholic Martyrs": "Irish Catholic Martyrs were dozens of people who have been sanctified in varying degrees for dying for their Roman Catholic faith between 1537 and 1714 in Ireland." Hmmmmm. I might have to adopt June 20th as my Irish day, since I've never really a big fan of St. Patrick's Day. I'll start tonight be hoisting a few during today's long daylight of evening.

A long-time University of Michigan fan, this story really brightened my day: "OSU mascot Brutus will walk in Columbus pride parade." It's fitting. Here's a post from a few years ago about the homoeroticism that is Buckeye Land.

I continue to listen to a lot of Al Kresta during my hours of gardening. I really enjoy him. Yesterday, as I was mowing weeds down for the (hopefully) last time this summer with my wheel hoe, he went into a monologue about how the Catholic Church has never responded in a positive way to the homosexual problem. Unlike abortion, where the Church responded with crisis pregnancy centers and adoption services, Catholics haven't responded with anything positive to help people with same sex attraction, instead responding by "making fag jokes" (Al's voice dripped disgust). Guilty as charged here. I hardly put same sex attraction on the same level as murder, but Al has a point. And for a moment there I felt bad, but in light of all the funny "fag jokes" out there, I don't see myself changing my ways any time soon.
