But we were able to use much of the border for gardening. The apple (Beverly Hills, great for making pies) and the tangerine tree were already there (along with two birch trees, a solanum (potato tree) a white rose bush, and a dead apricot tree). The fruit trees were in poor shape at the time. Last early October (we’re on So Cal) we planted an heirloom tomato plant, cherry tomato, red bell pepper, cucumber, meyer lemon, artichoke, and an after dark peppermint tree. The heirloom did great, the cherry tomato – eh, snails got to the cucumber plant, bell pepper failed. was able to bake three pies from the apples, tangerines were juicy and sweet in Dec & Jan. Artichokes took FOREVER, then finally produced fruit in the spring (11 total). Now our Better Boy, San Marzano, and Cherry tomato plants are flourishing like crazy. Eggplant’s doing well, as is the cucumber plant 2.0 (both a long ways away from fruiting). Apple tree already has apples. And our meyer lemon sapling still looks like a sapling but has a bunch of lemons on it – ready to start picking in a couple more weeks or so.
