"No man is allowed to be a judge in his own cause, because his interest would certainly bias his judgment, and, not improbably, corrupt his integrity." James Madison, Federalist No. 10

A truism, no doubt, but not recognized by those who, wrapped up in the self-interest of legitimizing their favored passion, tout their own objectivity and insist that the rest of society listen to their final judgment on the issue. We're not just talking about homosexuals, by the way. It applies to drug users who want drugs legalized, johns who want prostitution legalized, the pornography who assert First Amendment claims. Bottom line: If you're "into it," you're probably not "seein' it" for what it is.

It is quite human for the sinner to acknowledge his weakness and to ask mercy for his failings; what is unacceptable is the attitude of one who makes his own weakness the criterion of the truth about the good, so that he can feel self-justified, without even the need to have recourse to God and his mercy. An attitude of this sort corrupts the morality of society as a whole . . .

John Paul II, Veritatis Splendor, 104.
