Drive-by Porn
Eric Scheske wrote to his Michigan representative about a year ago, expressing concern that people had started to view pornographic movies on their car video players, with the result that others, including children, could see it. It looks like at least a handful of reps share his concerns. Link. Excerpt:
State lawmakers are trying to stop motorists from showing pornography so it can seen by others on the road. The Michigan Senate passed a bill today that would prohibit the "reckless" display of sexually explicit material inside a vehicle.
We're sure a lot of people object to the new law, but why? Do you really need to drag that junk onto the public highways? How much porn does a person need in his mental diet? Of course, some dolts will say it's a question of freedom ("Hey dude, my car, my property, my porn; I'll do what I want"), but our day doesn't have enough time in it to straighten out their tangled thought patterns.
That being said, we're not convinced a new law is necessary. Michigan has a general disorderly conduct statute that would seem to prohibit such stuff. If there's any doubt whether the general statute applies, the legislature could simply amend the disorderly conduct statute to include drive-by pornography.
Oh well, we're happy to see this small problem getting addressed.
