Music and (Very Little) Talk Radio

Here's a WSJ article about the radio industry's Canutin' efforts with regard to iPod and satellite radio (and, as pointed out in an article linked here Tuesday, additional electronic challenges down the road). Radio stations are beginning to play more music. Novel concept. Maybe AM talk radio will follow suit and give us more talk. You ever listen to sports talk radio, for instance? We listen to ESPN radio quite a bit and we're always surprised by the lack of material. Between a dozen or so ESPN self-promoting commercials every thirty minutes, regular advertising, lots of musical intros, and talk hosts that repeat themselves three or four times, we're guessing–with no exaggeration–that the total amount of information and analysis in thirty minutes of sports talk radio would equal two or three minutes of reading material.
