I subscribed to New York magazine last year on a lark. I've grown to greatly enjoy the provincial liberal rag. Its liberalism is more understood than preached . . . more of a worldview than a religion . . . so it's tolerable if occasionally nauseating. Anyway, I gleaned this drinking anecdote from the last issue of 2008:

Kyle Hausmann was accidentally locked into Williamsburg's Trophy Bar this past May after falling asleep in a bathroom. Upon waking, the Harvard grad, age 24, spent the next several hours trying to escape and surfing the Web on a laptop left under the D.J. booth (he said he didn't feel like drinking any more). Googling “what to do when you're locked in a bar” proved ineffective. He was discovered the next morning at 8:30 by one of the bar's owners and became briefly famous when a Times reporter chronicled his adventure.

I frequently see Internet links to "beer haiku," but I rarely click on 'em, mostly because I don't understand/like/tolerate haiku. But for some reason I clicked on one today and got a belated Christmas poem. Tis hardly the season, but it's too good not to pass on:

Before the sun rose
I snuck down to the tree and
Drank all my presents.

Econ Saturday or BYCU? Econ or BYCU? BYCU or Econ? BYCU:

SABMiller PLC, the London-based brewer of Grolsch, Miller Genuine Draft and Peroni Nastro Azzurro lagers, said on Thursday its beer shipments fell unexpectedly in the third quarter as consumers pulled back on their demand.
Beer usually holds up better than other categories during tough economic times, said Benj Steinman, editor of trade publication Beer Marketer's Insights, and that trend had been holding true during this recession for some segments of the industry. But the latest figures show the market is trending downward, perhaps accelerating as global economies continue to sputter, and relief seems uncertain.
Beer is “recession-resistant, not recession-proof,” Steinman said.

The Michigan auto industry wants a bailout, but a new Michigan phenom keeps growing: Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo. It's constructing a $5.2 million addition.

Long-time readers know that Bell's makes Oberon, one of my favorite beers.
