From the Notebooks

The Catholic Evolutionist on LSD

I was there when It happened, back when history really started, when memories began to do more than log instincts, when art started and language took its first steps to bridge minds, when evolution ended and living began.

Don't ask me how I got there.

But I was there. When the ape man got soul. A whole tribe got it at the same time. A Pentecost-type thing. They were sitting around, munching meat off bones and grunting and looking around blank-eyed.

Then swoosh.

The spirit was in them. A light went on.

Laughter.
