The [frat brothers] took the [pledge] to a room and stripped him of his clothes -- down to his T-shirt and boxer shorts -- and interrogated him as to where the other pledges were, Rego said.
"When apparently some of the information wasn't forthcoming enough," three men took turns shooting him in the chest and arms with BB guns, Rego said. In all, the three shot him repeatedly from a distance of 5 feet, leaving him with numerous welts and bruises.
During the incident, which happened two months after a Pleasant Hill man died in a hazing in Chico, the men also tried to force the Berkeley student to smoke marijuana and drink beer, but he refused, leading some of them to blow marijuana smoke into his face, Rego said.
Someone needs to remind us again why our public policy in this country is to encourage more and more young people to go to college. You spend a ton of money to learn little, and you're exposed to excess of every sort. You go into college religious (LINK) and come out agnostic, but with no ability to reason about either. We understand why individuals attend: they need the degree in order to get a job. But it's time to question whether they should need a degree in the first place.
