You Have No Freedom Not to Accommodate My Freedom
According to this article, ten states have laws that require employers to grant leave time to parents so they can attend their children's school functions. Other states are considering such a law.
It's a nice idea, obviously, but it wouldn't even be an issue if more mothers stayed home with their children. If women want to work, that's the choice they make, but we resent the coercion to accommodate their choice (e.g., at-work child care, Family and Medical Leave Act, and now forced time off for school functions). Aside: If such laws don't exempt small employers, the effects on small offices could be quite disruptive.
