Dean Martin sang "Marshmallow World," a tribute to billows of snow. That's what my town looks like now: mounds and mounds of snow. Quite beautiful, but tiresome. I cleared the driveway four times yesterday, and my wife did it once. Someone--probably the older of the Seven--will need to clear it again today. Hopefully, that'll be the end of it.

My wife bought me this book for Christmas: The Bad Catholic's Guide To Wine, Whiskey, And Song: A Spirited Look at Catholic Life and Lore from the Apocalypse to Zinfandel. At the risk of exaggerating, I'm going to call it a masterpiece. I haven't read all of it by any means (at 240 pages, it's thick for a humor book), but what I've read shows intense erudition, orthodox Catholic thinking, and a great sense of humor that any child of modernity will appreciate. The book is downright funny, and the humor is intertwined with genuine insight and interesting facts. Even if you're not a drinker, you'll enjoy it. If you are a drinker, you'll love it.

It's the feasts of Saints Basil and Gregory Nazianzen. Three of my earliest published articles focused on the Cappadocians. Great men, interesting times. Here are links to my saintly sketches (Basil, Gregory).

If you want a great book about these church fathers and eight or so others, I highly recommend Robert Payne's The Holy Fire.
