(And lest you think Clement was a kill-joy early Socialist, he was one of the first thinkers to say that Jesus's harsh instructions to the rich young man ("give away all you have"--Mark 10:17-31) doesn't condemn wealth itself; it merely condemns the "vain thoughts about wealth, the excitement and distress related to it, the worries that are the thorns of existence and that suffocate the seeds of life.")
