The punks find freedom today. Four of them have half a day, one has a whole day, and two don't know what the fuss is about but they feel the excitement. It'll be a logistical nightmare: after-school party, paper route, baseball game, overnighter. I'll have to sandwich office time in there, too.
The old joke is that mom can't wait until school starts back up in the Fall. We don't see it that way at all. Summers are far easier than school days. I like summer more because it gives me freedom to set my work hours however I want. I don't have to leave at the same time every morning to take children to school and I don't have after-school functions to attend. My wife likes summer more because she likewise has more freedom: the kids can stay up late and sleep in. If the little ones get up early, there's usually one bigger kid to take care of them until she rolls out of bed (since she was up to 11:00 corralling kids from neighborhood Kick the Can and Capture the Flag games). If that bigger kid is crabby because he should've slept in, he can nap at noon.
Summer is good. My children love their parochial school, but they love the summer freedom even more. I look forward to it.
