Monday Mornin' Miscellany
Animal rights activist frees caged birds. The birds, unable to deal with the real world, die. If the buffoon had merely read Chesterton, this wouldn't have happened.
Go here for discussion of Chesterton's prescience in related matters. Excerpt:
In Chesterton's story “The Yellow Bird,” a scientist by the name of Ivanhov becomes obsessed with the pursuit of liberty. He is writing a great book that will “embody some mathematical theory about the elimination of limits... It's expansion, that's the word; growing broader, always describing wider and wider circles; but that only means more self-fulfillment, and therefore serenity and peace.” Not just an idle thinker, Ivanhov acts on his theories. First, he liberates a canary from its cage, so unintentionally exposing the bird to subsequent attacks by wild birds.

A story this dire couldn't wait until Friday's Brews You Can Use: "That trademark Irish venue, the country pub - renowned as a place to chat, have a pint, hear some music and soak up the atmosphere - is facing challenging times." The smoking ban, drunk driving laws, and new drinking habits are blamed.
If anyone cares to fund a trip to Ireland for me, I promise to bring aid.
