I tend to agree with Orestes Brownson that there is no right of secession, but I also don't think the issue is nearly as cut-and-dry as people think (well, it's pretty cut-and-dry now as a practical matter, but theoretically, it's a tough call). It's coming up again, at least among some folks in Vermont. WaPo Link. I sympathize. If states could secede, or invoke nullification like Calhoun thought lawful, it would keep the federal government more honest.
