# Ash Wednesday

Happy [Ash Wednesday](http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01775b.htm?ref=thedailyeudemon.com), so to speak. Every Lent has been the same for me: I've come out determined to have a holy six weeks, and I'm fading before the ashes wear off my forehead. Human nature is rough.

No full-blown blogging today. Just a few quick things:

My daughter Meg (5) has been determined to sculpt our entire family out of snow. She finally got to it (with a little help from Max (3) and Marie (38)):

What's a necessity? All sorts of things, according to the [Pew Research Center](http://pewresearch.org/pubs/323/luxury-or-necessity?ref=thedailyeudemon.com). From *[The Atlantic Monthly](http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200703/primarysources?ref=thedailyeudemon.com)*: "Some of the newly necessary products on the '06 list weren't even on the radar a decade before–high-speed Internet access, for instance, which 29 percent of respondents now can't live without. But other items that made a leap toward widespread indispensability have been on the market for years or decades–dishwashers, for example, as well as microwaves, clothes dryers, and cable television." IPods, cell phones, and [gasoline-powered turtleneck sweaters](http://www.closkey.com/mybrilliantmistakes/archives/000319.html?ref=thedailyeudemon.com) can't be far behind.
