A new Catholic prayer book aimed at teenagers includes a prayer for God's help to avoid talking rubbish when drunk.
"Lord, if in an unsober state, and under the influence of those around me, I say something stupid, please give me strength to retract my words. Protect me against senseless bravado and pride," reads the prayer.
The book, released in Poland by Dominican monk Wojciech Jedrzejewski, has angered the Polish Catholic community as well as national media.
Actually, I kinda like it. It's a prayer for the "unsober" teenager, which isn't the same thing as "drunk" teenager. Teenage drinking is legal in Poland (so I've been told), and therefore is morally licit. Why shouldn't there be a prayer for avoiding a sinful pitfall associated with a legitimate act? Is it any different than praying for patience when working on one's ship-building hobby? How about a person who prays that he doesn't let desire to win over-rule his reason and sense of love while playing football?
