# The Weekend Eudemon

I'm moving mighty slow this morning. I was up late (1:30). I doubt there'll be any blogging today. As a token of appreciation for your understanding, I offer this anecdote:

The following classified ran in the nineteenth century:

> Farmer, aged 41, desires to correspond with a young woman of simple tastes. Beauty unnecessary; prettiness not desired. Object, matrimony.

A woman named Meg Charlton answered the ad and the two were married. The advertiser? Ulysses S. Grant. Ms. Charlton would eventually become the First Lady of the United States.

That's a neat story, but Grant's distinterst in beauty is hardly surprising, when you read about his drinking exploits. As the country song goes, "I went to bed at 2:00 with a ten and woke up at 10:00 with a two."
