This isn't exactly the type of crime that disturbs the mental equilibrium of society:
Four young men were arrested for luring a gay man to a remote location with an online promise of a sexual encounter, then attempting to rob him -- an incident that left the victim in critical condition after he ran into traffic to escape the attack, a police commander said Wednesday.
It's a hideous crime, of course, but it doesn't make a person think, "Gee, this could happen to me." Though maybe it could: "Hey Scheske, we got free beer over here!" But I think I'd get suspicious when they told me to bring money and to meet them in a well-known gay hangout.
Aside: Police are investigating whether this is a hate crime. This type of crime isn't exactly unprecedented. There have been plenty of instances when a john gets jumped by a hooker's pimp when the guy is, um, vulnerable.
