Dr. Death

Here's a troubling story from the New York Times about Dr. Eduard Verhagen, a cutting-edge Dutch physician who kills babies with serious health defects. It's euthanasia, but in this situation, there are no advance directives or testimony about what the victim would have wanted. It's just presumed. Euthanasia has been common in the Netherlands for years. This is merely the next logical step, just as eventually it'll be the responsibility of old people and retarded people and other defective people to go away and not bother us–monetarily, emotionally, intellectually–any more.

Perhaps the most telling line in the article? This one: "Dr. Verhagen does not admit to doubts about whether he is doing the right thing." The cutting-edge are always cocksure, no matter how wrong they could be.
