*My charitable effort of the week: Bishop John Steinbock ministered for 21 years on Skid Row and East Los Angeles. He wrote a book of anecdotes from Skid Row (Ministry of Presence). Proceeds from the sale of the book will be given to Catholic Charities. For more, see K T Cat.

*Joke from Happy Catholic:

Two engineering students crossing the campus when one said, "Where did you get such a great bike?"
The second engineer replied, "Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, "Take what you want."
The second engineer nodded approvingly, "Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn't have fit."

*Pithy post about the largely-forgotten Fred Allen, including a few Allenisms, like these two:

I have just returned from Boston. It is the only thing to do if you find yourself up there.
Most of us spend the first 6 days of each week sowing wild oats, then we go to church on Sunday and pray for a crop failure.

*Reminder: I'm looking for new blogs to feature here and at National Catholic Register's Blog Watch. If you know of good blogs that add fresh content most weekday mornings, please let me know (email link on your left).
