Ah, the first leg of the summer trifecta: Memorial Day weekend. My favorite. The July 4th weekend is often too busy, and Labor Day comes with a measure of summer's-end somberness. But Memorial Day? It screams, "Summer enjoyment."
And I'm spending it blogging . . . and working at the office. Things are busy, as usual, but I'm not complaining. If clients don't call, I don't get paid. I welcome the opportunity to earn extra cabbage on the weekend.
It's also a good weekend to spend at the office. Almost half of my children have been snatched away from me. The three oldest--Alex (13), Abbie (11), and Jack (9)--have gone north for a weekend of bird watching with their maternal grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Marie and I stayed behind with the four little kids, reveling in the experience of having a "small" family (double the average American, but still small by historical standards).
It's amazing what a difference it makes. We thought we'd miss the three older kids' home-making contributions--cleaning, helping watch the little kids, etc. But no. It turns out those three older kids create more work than they eliminate. Things are downright placid around here. We miss them terribly, of course. But out of love, not out of the absence of labor.
Blogging should be reasonably active this weekend. Sunday will be slow, as usual, but today and Monday should be just fine.
