I missed this yesterday:

> [A US study has concluded that children consume the caloric equivalent of a bag of potato chips for every hour they spend in front of a television. Food advertising in implicated in causing unconscious eating among young viewers](http://www.boingboing.net/2006/04/25/kids%5Feat%5Fa%5Fbag%5Fof%5Fch.html?ref=thedailyeudemon.com).

Advertising is the culprit? How about the lazy lifestyle inculcated in these kids that can't resist the lure of good-tasting food? The fat kids are duped by advertising. They're duped by the idea that sin in one area of their lives (entertainment) doesn't spread to another area (eating). If you prefer TV to playing outside, you're more likely to prefer McDonald's to a healthy turkey sandwich. Of course, all kids prefer McDonald's to a turkey sandwich, but to the kids who aren't wired with laziness, the idea of eating healthy food to the detriment of short term satisfaction also makes sense.
