I ran across this today:
Hubbard said, "THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM..., because the second you start telling anybody close to the truth, you start releasing him and he gets tougher and tougher to control." - Technique 88
Now, I like to mock Scientology as much as the next guy, but it's hard to believe that intelligent people like Tom Cruise and John Travolta accept a "religion" that is so bizarre. And no, I'm not being sarcastic. Cruise and Travolta have had long and successful careers in an extremely competitive and tough business. They must have something behind the eyes. How could they fall for a doctrine that is full of so much deception and weirdness? Quite frankly, it makes me doubt the accusations against Scientology, but then I'm reminded of Fr. Sibley's intelligent rants against them at The Saintly Salmagundi, and I'm back to believing the outrageousness. It's hard to say. I'd spend time reading some Dianetic pages or other Hubbard materials, but I'd rather read Ruminations on the After Life by Shirley MacLaine.
Aside: I went to The Saintly Salmagundi to pull up some of his anti-Scientology material, and all the items weren't available. They've apparently been deleted. That's too bad. There was a treasure trove of good stuff over there.
