What a strange country we've become.
You can get an abortion any time you want and for any reason. The people who provide you this "service" are hardly regulated by the government.
But if you choose to have a baby, and have that baby in your home with the help of a midwife, your midwife risks prosecution in some states - for practicing medicine without a license.
That's just what happened to an Indiana midwife, recently, in a story reported in today's New York Times.
About 99 percent of all births take place in hospitals. But midwifery has been around since ancient times. And midwives rightly see the anti-midwife laws in Indiana and 9 other states as a powerplay by doctors.
According to the article, midwives "say the ability of women to choose to give birth at home is under assault from a medical establishment dominated by men who, for reasons of money and status, resent a centuries-old tradition that long ago anticipated the concerns of modern feminism."
