> It is an alarming way of putting it, since the word "liturgist" is pretty much a synonym for "pompous preening incompetent who wrecks what he does not understand, and wrecks it with a smile." I exaggerate, I admit, and I know some fine liturgical scholars, who are perfectly sane and understand the Church's traditions, but the number of professional liturgists whom that phrase describes is distressingly high.
