Governor Mitt Romney, who frequently tells Republican audiences that every child has a right to have a mother and father, acknowledged yesterday that same-sex couples have ''a legitimate interest" in adopting children.
Romney said he would file a ''very narrow" bill aimed at letting Catholic Charities, the social service arm of the Boston Archdiocese, and other religious groups exclude same-sex couples from their adoption programs if including them violates religious tenets. But he also noted that gays and lesbians have a right to adopt.
Link.
This is disconcerting. Romney is the Republican front-runner for 2008. I don't think Frist will stick.
Why do gays have a "legitimate interest" in adopting children? Because they want to? Is there anything more to it than their naked desire?
Their sexual activities aren't naturally geared toward procreation, hence children aren't a natural byproduct of their activities. It's natural that they don't have children, whereas it's not natural for heterosexual couples not to have them, hence the place of adoption.
The contraceptive mentality that seized the U.S. in the 1960s (and started even earlier) paved the way for this mess. Most heterosexual couples practice sterile sex and still get children. Why not the homosexuals? It's not natural, sure, but neither are vasectomies, the pill, and other contraceptives. The homosexuals are winning many of their arguments because most of our country's heterosexuals share significant common ground with them in their sex lives.
