On Hawaii

Kauffman

Grover Cleveland: “Our interference in the revolution of 1893 was disgraceful,” and the absorption of these Pacific islands would be “a perversion of our national mission.”

When Hawaii was annexed, Cleveland announced himself “ashamed of the whole affair.”

Well, surely we regret annexing it now (it's the most leftward of the leftist, going 2-to-1 for Hillary over Trump, beating even California in the percentage vote for her).

Man, I'd like to allow California and Hawaii to secede, forming their own country. They'd be bankrupt in twenty years. I'd even let them take Washington and Oregon with them, but we'd need to hold onto southern California so we have ample access to the Pacific (and since San Diego is a Republican stronghold, that shouldn't be terribly objectionable to many people).
