The Weekend Eudemon

Rough week. Two partners bolted for Florida, leaving me with a desk full of paperwork and a phone that rang like Elvis had just published his unlisted number. I planned on coming home early yesterday to work on my Catholic Exchange column and drink a few beers, but a handful of "I have to talk to him today" and "IÂ want to meet with him today" phone calls later, and I didn't get home until 6:00. I'll be heading back this morning.

The good thing is, my firm operates on an "eat what you kill" system, meaning every dollar I earn is mine. I don't have to kick anything up to senior partners. It's a great system, until I'm the senior partner, then maybe I'll have to change it. I'll rationalize it somehow.

Can anyone tell me this: Why do monthly magazines tend to show up the same week? In the past four days, I've received The Atlantic Monthly, Crisis, and The American Conservative. The two weeks before, none of my monthly rags came.

I'm not complaining. I kind of like it. Logically, I would prefer the magazines to come at spaced intervals, so I could finish one, just as the other one is arriving. But emotionally, I like the "Christmas morning" effect.

Things are going well at TDE. Growing steadily, but not as quickly as I'd like nor as quickly as it was. I suspect the leaps-and-bounds growth is over, though I don't understand why. It seems to me that it should increase incrementally. Oh well, it's enjoyable either way.

As always, if you could forward the URL to friends and family I appreciate it.

Until next week, keep a cold one at your elbow and a warm one in your heart.
