Weekend Eudemon
Anyone else watch the Olympic opening ceremonies last night? My family tried to. The media outlets I consulted said the ceremonies would be shown at 8:00 p.m. It was tape delayed, so there was no reason NBC couldn't start it then. But instead? They waited until a few minutes after 9:00. During the first hour they showed crap--absolute crap: boring interviews, downhill racing trial runs, and a few other pieces of . . . crap. Most frustrating. I absolutely detest the networks' habit of lying about when events will really begin. It's simply unacceptable. It's also an indicia of the way the MSM does business and why they can't be trusted: if they can't even be honest about a little thing, what makes us think they'll be honest with big things?
The opening ceremonies were entertaining, incidentally. Tacky and outlandish, but the ridiculous elaborateness of it all is always amusing, even if a bit nauseating. Actually, very nauseating, when you hear that the opening and closing ceremonies cost $34 million.
I'm aware that a lot of my posts have been short on original commentary this week. Things have been hectic. After my wife and I spearheaded the Mardi Gras Auction Party for the kids' parochial school last Friday, we spent much of Saturday cleaning up after it. We went to church Saturday evening, expecting to get our lives back to normal on Sunday. While out for a walk with her father and our son Jack, she decided to sled down a hill. The sled veered, she stuck out her foot to straighten it, and somehow broke it, snapping the third and fourth metatarsals. She hasn't been able to put any weight on it all week, and isn't even allowed to try walking on it--even with one of those big Darth Vader boots--until late next week. Although she's remarkably proficient for a cripple, my household chores--from driving kids around to shopping--have increased, leaving less time for blogging.
Things are going well at TDE. Traffic keeps increasing, and I'm getting a pretty good regular readership. The Kiosk isn't doing very well, but that's alright. It was a whim, it doesn't take up much space on the front page, and when someone does post something over there, it's pretty good. In the past two days, for instance, there have been two very good posts.
Until next week, keep warm and keep hope.
