Prompted by a New York City nonprofit group that pushes a soybean-based coffee substitute, Rawson issued a proclamation declaring March as National Caffeine Awareness Month in Shaker Heights. . . .
Rawson's proclamation says caffeine consumption is linked to heart disease, hypoglycemia, central nervous system disorders and some cancers, language suggested by Caffeine Awareness Alliance, the nonprofit run by Al and Marina Kushner.
But the American Heart Association has said it's uncertain whether there is a direct link between heart disease and coffee drinking. And according to the Mayo Clinic, moderate consumption of caffeine - about two 8-ounce cups of coffee a day - isn't harmful.
