Miscellaneous Rambling
Happy Martin Luther King Day. Yes, I'm one of those who don't believe MLK deserves his own holiday, and I think it's absolutely absurd that he is the only person in the history of the United States (and the history of the world) who gets his own federal holiday (Lincoln and Washington share one). That being said, MLK had his greatness, and I don't agree with those who refer to it as "James Early Ray Day." * * * * * * * Even a die-hard leftist like Richard Cohen thinks MLK wouldn't have been secularly canonized if, instead of being assassinated young, he had lived to, say, Cosby's age . . . and been exposed like Cosby. * * * * * * * But let me be clear: Cosby's allegations involve rape. No one has ever accused MLK of rape. Just serial adultery, which one might argue, with just a wee bit of cogency, conflicts with his preacher status. * * * * * * * Didn't know: The Lorraine Motel, the place where MLK was assassinated, is now the centerpiece of the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. * * * * * * * I've been to Memphis twice. Great city! Okay, not really. It's a dump. But I dig Graceland and Beale Street.
