Miscellaneous Rambling
So my son is a freshman at Eastern Michigan University. Its homecoming was last weekend. He sent me this text, "Eastern gave the homecoming couple award to two lesbians, one of which said she is an 'avid member' of Catholics on Campus." Great, just freakin' great. It's such twisted world, and I fear Catholics are leading the way. * * * * * * * We are a light of the world? Hardly. Hardly at all. We have great lights, of course. Heck, we have the greatest lights (the saints). But the Catholic benighted are doing far more damage than Catholic lights are doing good. * * * * * * * But some things are returning to normal: My Michigan Wolverines are good again and my Detroit Lions stink again. * * * * * * * The Lions, incidentally, fascinate me. I think that the players have literally given up and aren't even trying at this point. I'm not saying they're throwing games intentionally, but they clearly couldn't care less if they lose every game this year. It's something to see. I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL steps in behind closed doors and tells the franchise that they need to do something radical. They're not even playing legitimate games at this point. I can't be the only fan who's watching and saying, "These guys have quit, completely flat-out quit." And I'm not even mad about it. I'm simply fascinated. * * * * * * * UM faces off against MSU next Saturday. The game will feature two Catholic head coaches, both of whom are really serious about their faith. * * * * * * * Why do Catholics seem to be disproportionately represented in the major sports? I wonder if it's related to Catholics' second-rate status in society until the 1960s? Like the under-privileged today, sports was a way out of the ghetto and that mindset still has an impact today. I don't know. * * * * * * * It might also pertain to an Escriva-like faith (whether conscious or a way of thought in general), which says that, to do anything poorly reflects poorly on your faith, so they take their vocations seriously. * * * * * * * Or then again, maybe they aren't disproportionately represented. That's simply my casual perception. * * * * * * * I recently started frequenting Chronica. It's a Catholic Drudge, but a big more "sober" than Spirit Daily. It provides good links, but its organization is disorientating and sometimes I have to click two or three times to get to a story.
