# DiLorenzo on Ethics Plan

One of the cleverest writers brings out Mencken to disabuse any hope for a decent ethics plan from Congress:

> Today's AP news item that "Republican Congress Unveils its New Ethics Plan" led me to ask myself, "What would H.L. Mencken think of this?" Here are a few gems from the great H.L. that give us an indication:

> "Looking for an honest politician is like looking for an ethical burglar."

> "Government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods."

> "There is no distinctly native American criminal class except for Congress."

> Is there really anyone in American who believes that the Republican Party (accompanied by the Democrats with their own "ethics plan") will engage in an ethical cleansing now that a few of them have been caught red handed taking very large bribes? If so, we really are becoming a nation of morons.
