One of the cleverest writers brings out Mencken to disabuse any hope for a decent ethics plan from Congress:
Today's AP news item that "Republican Congress Unveils its New Ethics Plan" led me to ask myself, "What would H.L. Mencken think of this?" Here are a few gems from the great H.L. that give us an indication:
"Looking for an honest politician is like looking for an ethical burglar."
"Government is a broker in pillage, and every election is sort of an advance auction sale of stolen goods."
"There is no distinctly native American criminal class except for Congress."
Is there really anyone in American who believes that the Republican Party (accompanied by the Democrats with their own "ethics plan") will engage in an ethical cleansing now that a few of them have been caught red handed taking very large bribes? If so, we really are becoming a nation of morons.
