A TDE reader sent me this story last week:

"On Ash Wednesday every year, German politicians are given a chance to drink a lot of beer in tents and then take to a podium to speak their minds on any subject, or even crack a few jokes about their opponents."

Odd tradition, that.

And yes, it's in Bavaria, the Catholic south, not Berlin. I don't know much about German culture, but you would've hoped the homeland of a recent Pope would show a bit more reverence.

But then again, we are talking about politicians.
