Preemptive strike: This was not motivated by the Eurabian Civil Wars, though I find the timing delicious:

A French monk who lived among the Tuareg people in the Sahara and was killed in an anti-French uprising in Algeria in 1916 was beatified by the Vatican yesterday, the last formal step before possible sainthood.
Pope Benedict XVI praised Charles de Foucauld's humility, in a ceremony at St. Peter's Basilica.
