When Smart Guys Watch TV
A site dedicated to complaining about, and pointing out errors in, TV programs. Some are petty, some are clever, some are learned. Samples:
On 22 March 1999, it was announced that the last Oscar of the century was being awarded. It was not explained why there would be no awards in 2000.
On 19 December 2000, Geena Davis said that "India remains 2.5% Christian" as "a vestige of the British Empire". There have been Christians in India for over a millennium. More may have converted after Portuguese missionaries arrived in the 16th century. The British only added to the considerable number of Christians already there.
On or about 16 February 2001, Bill Maher said Bill Clinton had been out of office for months. He had been out of office for less than four weeks.
On 30 December 1999, Bill Maher claimed "Germany started World War I." Austria-Hungary, whose archduke had been assassinated in Bosnia, started the war on July 28, 1914 against Serbia. Germany did not enter the war until four days later.
The Practice: On 9 July 2000, during testimony by the medical examiner, the murder defendant attacked and choked prosecutor Helen Gamble. A lead defense attorney came to the unconscious prosecutor's aid and yelled for an ambulance. The medical examiner was a physician; why didn't he rush to administer aid to the injured prosecutor?
