Maybe rock-n-roll has been wildly popular and rock stars the object of disproportionate admiration because art has dropped to a low level of appreciation in our culture. In a culture where art isn't appreciated, lower forms of art will step in to fulfill that primordial human need that goes back to the cave drawings. Maybe that's why movies and movie stars have such high status in our culture, too.
