Gay Opinion

The Editor of the Express Gay News rails against Pope Benedict XVI. Link. It's full of insight, like this comment:

This latest anti-gay move by the Catholic Church is less likely to result in affecting political policies than it is to further marginalize the Catholic Church as a force in modern society.

It's only the thousandth time I've heard it. He could be right, of course. But it's better to have a shrunken church with integrity and respect than an amorphous colossus with neither. America has the latter version of the Catholic Church now, and it's been a joke for the past thirty years. Let's go for the former version and see what happens.

I have a hunch that the Church in America won't shrink and become marginalized. In fact, I suspect the opposite will occur, which is exactly what the folks like the Express Gay editor really fear. Otherwise, they wouldn't harp on it so much.

But even if the Church shrinks to the margins, at least it can look at itself in the proverbial mirror, knowing it did the right thing.
